WAGSTAFF WATCHES GMT INSTRUCTIONS
Seiko NH34 Automatic Movement with Fixed 24-Hour Bezel
Welcome to Your Wagstaff GMT
Congratulations on your Wagstaff GMT timepiece. This watch represents a continuation of Albert Wagstaff's 1923 vision – reliable British horology designed for those whose lives span more than one horizon. Whether you're coordinating across continents or simply wish to keep Greenwich Mean Time alongside your local hour, this guide will help you master your GMT complication.
UNDERSTANDING YOUR MOVEMENT
Your Wagstaff GMT is powered by the TMI Seiko NH34 automatic movement – a robust 24-jewel calibre renowned for its reliability. This is a "caller's GMT," meaning the 24-hour hand can be adjusted independently from your local time, making it ideal for travellers who cross time zones.
Key Features:
- Automatic winding with manual wind capability
- 41-hour power reserve when fully wound
- Hacking seconds (second hand stops when crown is pulled out)
- Date complication
- Independent 24-hour GMT hand
- Fixed 24-hour bezel for second timezone reference
What Makes This Different: Unlike rotating bezel GMT watches, your Wagstaff features a fixed outer 24-hour scale. This provides cleaner aesthetics and enhanced water resistance, whilst the independent GMT hand gives you all the functionality needed to track a second time zone with ease.
THE CROWN POSITIONS
Your watch crown operates in three distinct positions:
Position 0 (Pushed In & Screwed Down):
- Normal wearing position
- The watch is running and winding automatically from wrist movement
- The crown may be turned clockwise for manual winding
Position 1 (First Click Out):
- Date setting: Turn the crown counter-clockwise to advance the date
- GMT hand setting: Turn the crown clockwise to adjust the 24-hour hand in one-hour increments
Position 2 (Fully Extended):
- Time setting for the hour and minute hands
- Second-hand stops (hacking function) for precise time setting
- Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to set the time
INITIAL SETUP: GETTING STARTED
Step 1: Wind Your Watch If your watch has stopped or is new, unscrew the crown and give it 20-30 clockwise rotations. You cannot overwind an automatic movement, but 20-30 turns will ensure adequate power reserve.
Step 2: Set the Time
- Pull the crown to Position 2 (the second hand will stop)
- Rotate the crown clockwise to set the correct local time.
- Important: Ensure you know whether it's AM or PM – rotate the hands through midnight (you'll see the date change) to confirm
Step 3: Set the Date
- Push the crown back to Position 1
- Turn the crown counter-clockwise to advance the date to today's date.
- WARNING: Never adjust the date when the time shown is between 21:00 (9 PM) and 03:00 (3 AM), as this can damage the date-changing mechanism
Step 4: Set Your GMT Hand
- With the crown at Position 1
- Turn the crown clockwise to advance the GMT hand in one-hour increments
- Please set it to your home time zone or reference time zone in 24-hour format
- Push the crown in and screw down firmly
UNDERSTANDING 24-HOUR TIME
The GMT hand and fixed outer bezel use 24-hour time (sometimes called military time). Here's how to read it:
- Morning hours (AM): Same as regular time (01:00 = 1 AM, 11:00 = 11 AM)
- Afternoon/Evening (PM): Add 12 to the hour (13:00 = 1 PM, 22:00 = 10 PM, 24:00/00:00 = Midnight)
Key Points:
- The GMT hand makes one complete rotation every 24 hours (unlike your hour hand, which goes round twice daily)
- The GMT hand moves at half the speed of your regular hour hand
- This is normal – they are not meant to stay equidistant apart
USING YOUR FIXED BEZEL GMT: TWO METHODS
METHOD 1: Traditional Dual Time (Simplest)
This is the most straightforward way to use your GMT:
- Set your main hands (hour/minute) to your current local time
- Set your GMT hand (using Position 1) to your reference time zone in 24-hour format
- Read local time from the main hands using the 12-hour dial markers
- Read your second time zone from the GMT hand against the fixed 24-hour bezel
Example: You're in London (15:00/3 PM), but need to track New York time (10:00 AM/10:00):
- Main hands: 3:00 (using hour markers)
- GMT hand: pointing to 10 on the fixed 24-hour bezel
METHOD 2: Advanced Three-Zone Tracking (For Experienced Users)
If you're comfortable with time zone mathematics, you can use mental calculation with the fixed bezel to reference a third zone:
- Set the main hands to local time
- Set the GMT hand to UTC/GMT (London) time
- Calculate any third time zone by adding or subtracting from the GMT hand position
Example: You're in Tokyo (local time 09:00 AM on the main hands), the GMT hand set to 00:00 (midnight in London). To know Paris time (UTC+1), you'd look one hour ahead of your GMT hand position = 01:00.
Note: This method requires comfort with UTC offsets and is more complex with a fixed bezel than a rotating one. Most Wagstaff owners find Method 1 entirely sufficient.
DATE SETTING: CRITICAL WARNINGS
THE 9 PM TO 3 AM RULE
Never adjust the date or GMT hand when your watch shows a time between 21:00 (9 PM) and 03:00 (3 AM). During these hours, the date mechanism is engaged and actively preparing to change. Forcing a date change during this period will damage the mechanism and void your warranty.
If You're Uncertain of the Time:
- Pull the crown to Position 2
- Advance the hands clockwise until the date changes (this is midnight)
- Continue forward to at least 03:00 (3 AM) or back to before 21:00 (9 PM)
- Now you can safely set the date at Position 1
Never Turn Hands Counter-Clockwise Past Midnight: If you accidentally pass your desired time, continue rotating clockwise for a full rotation rather than going backwards.
DAILY WEARING & CARE
Automatic Winding: Your NH34 movement winds itself through the natural motion of your wrist. Wearing your watch for approximately 10 hours daily will maintain the power reserve. If you don't wear it daily, wind it manually (20 rotations) before putting it on.
Water Resistance: Please check your specific model's water resistance rating. Even with good water resistance, avoid operating the crown underwater or when the watch is wet.
Accuracy: Mechanical watches vary in their timekeeping. The NH34 is adjusted at the workshop to +40/-20 seconds per day, though actual performance varies with the wearing position, temperature, and the degree of mainspring winding. This is normal for automatic movements.
Service Intervals: We recommend servicing every 3-5 years to maintain optimal performance. This includes cleaning, oiling, and replacing worn components.
COMMON QUESTIONS
"My GMT hand isn't moving!" The GMT hand moves very slowly – one full rotation per 24 hours. It advances one hour on the bezel every hour. This is the correct operation.
"The GMT and hour hands are getting further apart – is this broken?" No. The GMT hand completes one rotation per day, whilst the hour hand completes two rotations per day. They move at different speeds and will not maintain the same distance apart. This is by design.
"Can I track three time zones?" Yes, though with a fixed bezel, it requires mental calculation. Your main hands show local time, your GMT hand shows a reference time (typically home or UTC), and you can calculate a third zone from the GMT hand position.
"How do I know if it's wound enough?" If the watch is running, it has sufficient power. For optimal accuracy, wind it 20 times before wearing if it's been sitting unused.
